One in particular is of our steward, John, from Goa. On a later trip out he popped into my primary school to leave me cigarettes for Dad and a teddy bear for me! Of course I called the bear John! Sadly, we never heard from him again. Name: Roy

Schul, nee Robinson CommentsMy mother and one of my brothers sailed on the SS Strathmore from India to England. My father and oldest brother had already returned to England. We landed in Liverpool in time for me enjoy the school holidays. My father retired from Indian Army Ordnance Corps and transferring from the Buffs. Rumer Goddin was a famous write who was among the passengers. This was the first trip after the war that the Strathmore sailed without escort. We did sight a mine in the Mediterranean. I was the only passenger to get off the vessel during the voyage. During a storm I fell out of my bunk and dislocated my jaw. At the south end of the Suez they took me off to an Army hospital have my jaw checked. It was not broken, and I returned to the ship to a great deal of curiosity. Name: Georgina

Made sailboats from 'flat 50's', learned how to play ping pong, snuck into the first class pool, got dunked by King Neptune, and made 'lollies' from soap to feed to my much older.meaner brother, built castles with rubber bricks, watched tanks as we sailed through the Suez (I believe we were the last ship through prior to the Suez Crisis), continually raided the kitchen for the great cheese they had, and many many many more memories. I would appreciate hearing from others who may have been on this trip. Thanks for this site! Name: Brian

Riley CommentsGreat Web Page Mel. Brought back a lot of memories browsing about the Strathaird. A lovely old ship. It took us 4 weeks to reach Port Adelaide from Tilbury Docks. When I say us, I mean my husband a five year old daughter & a 14 month old son.Plus I was 6 months pregnant at the time too.It was the ships last trip to Australia, So there were lots of parties. Plus we spent Easter aboard too. It would be great if there is anyone else out there who sailed on the Strathaird at the same time as we did & could get in touch. Apart from sea sickness, we had a great trip, quite rough coming through the Australian Bite though, dishes crashing all over the place. Our family was very lucky. We had a cancellation booking. I had a cabin for me & the 2 children & my hubby had a single cabin next door to us. We were on the first promanade deck, which was D deck.I could go on for ever but I think I have written enough. Keep up the reseach Mel. Cheerio Elsie. Name: Nick

I was seven weeks old when my Mother & I boarded the Stratheden in King George V docks, Glasgow, Scotland, on September,16th, 1941, to join my Father in Canada where he was stationed with the Royal Air Force at the time. Todhunter CommentsCan anyone tell me the exact date when the Iberia left Freemantle in April 1959? Call me "old sentimental" if you like, I don't care, I'm 50, and it is a safe age to be sentimental.. It seems most of us were taken where our parents went - sadly, we came back. I remember the passage well, and the arrival in Tilbury, it was cold, muggy and drab. Of course there was a girl, sweet, Auburn hair, but she was nervous about a part-amputated finger. She stood next to me at the railing as we sailed up the Thames. The weather didn't impress her either. The film "Titanic" didn't even come close to that reality. Can anyone give me the departure and arrival dates? And who was that auburn-haired girl? And if you want some original P&O baggage labels (unmarked), let me know, there are a few up for grabs. Name: Paul
Twigg CommentsWhat an interesting site, Mel. I was around 11 years old arriving in Sydney with my parents. Hardly saw them while on board . . . had too good a time time with kids I met! I have memories of playing around the decks, punctuated by breakfast, lunch and dinner (2 sittings), beef tea on deck in the morning, ice cream in the afternoon, games, cinema from time to time, learning to play chess.
