Name: Jennifer Thompson CommentsThank you very much for the site! I have vivid memories of coming to New Zealand on the Orsova. I was 6 years old. I remember clearly the first time I saw the Orsova in Los Angeles- looking up at the bow the ship looked frighteningly enormous to me. It is so interesting to look at the pictures of the Orsova on your site and to see that it was actually quite a modest sized ship! I'd love to hear from anyone who was on the same voyage as me. Name: Sarah Chapman CommentsHi, very interesting to find a bit of background about the Strathaird. My father-in-law came back to England on her from South Africa, during her time as a troop ship, in Summer 1945. We have his Initiation Certificate for crossing over the equator on her! Name: John CommentsI have no memories of this ship except the knowledge that I was travelling with my parents to Australia from Vancouver. Name: Graham McGinley CommentsOur family left Tilbury docks with a very sad farewell to relatives. Disembarked at Comslie Hostel in Brisbane six weeks later. As a nine year old it was great fun. I learnt how to play Monoploy in the kids section near the back of the ship. The games banker was a friend of mine and kept passing me money under the table but nobody seemed to realise that although I had no property, I always had cash. The Bay of Biscay was rough and I was sick in bed for two days. Crossing the equator was an experience. I was very grown up and ate with my parents while my younger brother, Peter, had to eat with the younger ones. He was only 3. A good site bringing back memories. Name: Wendy CommentsMy family emigrated to Australia in 1952/53 but returned after only 1 year. My mother was homesick!!. I have one of the original passenger lists. I couldn't believe your website after all these years. Its amazing!!!!! Name: Jim Dunster CommentsAfter one trip on Oriana I joined Oronsay in mid 1963. I was Deckman on the Stadium and Sundecks for most of my time on her. Covering all decks in later times as the number of Deckmen reduced from six to three. Left Oronsay in 1969, got married to Jean whom I met on the Oronsay, she was going back to UK for a holiday. While on the Oriana I woke up one morning and found Sydney had come to visit me during the night. One look was all it took and here I am. But only after many graet years on the Oronsay. Any one on the Oronsay during this time may remember me as the guy who half emptied the pools for kids swimming in the afternoons or suppled new deck quoits and such when they got washed in the big tub. Or decorated the ballrooms for functions and held the "horses" during race nights, or assembled passengers for fancy dress nights and other events. Other crew will recognise me as one of the regulars in the "pig" with the deck crowd on the starboard side. Fred, Tom the Sailmaker, Spud, George, Ginger and many others. I would be interested to hear from any one who was on Oronsay at my time. PS any one from PWSTS. there is a great site set up by Andy Gale and his wife Jen, daughter of the late Bill Porte who will be remembered by all who new him, just search for PWSTS in google.
