My brother and I each had a single cabin with two windows.  My parents had a double cabin just nearby. Would love to hear from anyone who may have travelled to Australia on the same voyage.

Read with interest the diary of John Leslie, engineer on Strathallan. My father in law, George Milne (Aberdeen) also worked at Barrow as Strathallan was built and then, like John Leslie, he joined P&O in 1938 (as an electrical engineer). He sailed on Strathallan until it was torpedoed. He retired from P&O in 1974. We would be interested to hear from Mrs Leslie. P.S. footage of the launch of Strathallan can be seen on British Pathe website.

Sailed from Tilbury Jan 1959 via the usual Aden, Port Said, Colombo, Fremantle, Melbourne and arrived in Sydney on February 13th 1959. At one point in the journey we stopped in the middle of the night to pick up some stowaways ex-Sydney ...I think from the Iberia...they were transferred from boat to boat...my family does not believe me...can anyone confirm this please. Would like to hear from anyone who was on that particular cruise. (mainly migrants) We settled in Strathfield Sydney and then three years or so later our family moved to the North Shore at St.Ives. I defected to the West in 1969 living in Kalgoorlie for some years and now live in Esperance W.A. Love your website - brought back a flood of memories - some very poignant. I would like to hear from anyone aged about 13 in 1959.

I travelled as a 12yo on the wonderful Strathnaver to a new life here is Oz. Have marvellous memories of the trip, the excitement and fun and the sights and sounds etc. I too remember beef tea and ice cream on deck, and a "glass of lemonade and a packet of crips" in the Smoking Room with Dad after my 'Childrens Sitting' lunch with Mum and my 8 month old brother!! Then having to 'babysit' him while Mum & Dad had lunch, then the same again at dinner. Great times, wonderful nostalgic memories. Great site guys, I'm glad there are so many of us who loved the ships and their stories.

Fantastic find...keep up the great work. I was 5th Engineer on Strathnaver which was sister ship to Strathaird both being the only electrically powered steamships in the fleet. The engine rooms were miniature power stations on these two ships. An adventure of a lifetime which culminated in me jumping ship in Sydney...I am still here after 50 years...who wants to go back!  I have more pictures and menus if anybody is interested.

I was 12 yrs old when I sailed on Strathnaver with my Mom, Dad & brother from Tilbury in October 1960 arriving in Melbourne in November after a fabulous 4 weeks during which we plucked a sole survivor from the Red Sea the day after his ship sank during a storm. We put him ashore in Aden (I think) the next day. I know I can't possibly recall everything about that wonderful voyage but I have a number of very happy memories. Even queueing for a stretcher bed on which to sleep on deck when it was just too hot to sleep in our shared 4 berth cabin next to the engine room. My other brother & his wife also sailed in Strathnaver in 1958 (see entry from Brian & Norma on P7 in guest book) though they had a much better cabin. Still wouldn't swap the expereince. Many thanks for the site which I visit for a regular dose of nostalgia.

I had my 10th birthday on the 31st March which was also Good Friday. I got a Birthday cake, card, easter egg & the crew sang happy birthday. We didn't do the Cross the Equator ceremony but I was still given a certificate which I still have. When crossing the Great Aust Bight it was very rough & meal times were tricky, I remember looking outside & seeing all ocean one moment, then all sky the next. For memory the dining chairs where attached by chains to the floor and our plates where sliding along the table & you shared your meal with the person next to you. Another thing I remember was bath time. Children were not allowed to have baths alone a parent had to be with them.We had to bathe in salt water & Mum rinsed us off with fresh water at the end. Night times the cabin boys in charge of our area were our baby sitters & kept a close eye on us. Being 10yrs of age it was an exciting adventure. It was a lot of fun with new friends being made. On arrival we stayed at Elder Park Hostel (now the site of the Adelaide Festival Theatre)until we settled into our home at Elizabeth Park. You website brought back so many memories. Thanks for the journey.

We took 5 weeks as there was a Suez canal crisis so we had to come via the Cape. We had a crisis of our own on board as lots of the kids came down with measles. I escaped but my sister did not. It curtailed a lot of sightseeing as my Mother and Sister were confined to ship. I would love to get a passenger list and\or hear from anyone that made the trip at the same time.

My family emigrated from Adelaide Australia to America in 1965, I was 3 years old, the very end of steamship travel. Arrived in America at the port of San Pedro - today everyone arrives at LAX. Memories of passage limited to King Neptune, getting seasick alone in the cabin while my parents were at dinner (the poor steward not very happy) and the horn blowing loudly enough to shock my system. My grandfather and great-grandfather were each involved in South Australian maritime history and each served as Captain and earned Best and Fairest with the Port Adelaide Football Club.  After arriving in America on the SS Iberia at age 3, I went on to graduate from Yale and Harvard Law School and am now a proud member of the California Club.  All made possible, ultimately, by a great ship at the end of a great era.  I still have some souvenirs, including a P&O trunk from the voyage. Salute, and thanks for a great site - and great to connect with our common English, Australian and American heritages, connected by all of us being borne around the world by these great ships!

An inspirational  site Mel. Thankyou! Sailed on the Strathnaver from Singapore..an army family. My father had finished his spell of army service in Kluang, Malaya (armourer in the R.E.M.E.) Sailing on the Strathnaver during what was to be the twilight of the "EMPIRE" was for my parents and their three children a wonderful and unforgetable experience. As a child of eight I took every opportunity to explore the ship right down to the engine room. We were absolutely devastated when we heard the news in 1962 that she was being broken up. Such a proud old lady!I even remember my cabin number...D 349. So pleased we kept absolutely everything from our voyage...from passenger lists, menus, down to items such as landing cards, transit passenger cards, childrens service cards etc.In fact, enough to start up a library!

My family and I sailed from Bombay to Tilbury Docks and arrived - I believe, March 5th, 1950. I didn't see many people writing about leaving India for Britain on your site. We had an extensive family in India and they all left to come over on different P & O ships, Strathmore, Stratheden, etc. Though British, Irish & Scots our roots went back 150 plus years in India and Britain (though we said we were "going home") was really an unknown quantity to us. I was only six and half or something but remember the ship very very well, in fact they thought I had gone overboard and the Captain was going to halt the ship but they found me!  Love your site and the wonderful pictures. I believe the Strathnaver was sold to Japan for scrap, was it not? I wonder if anybody out there reading this knew the White family from Indore and Mhow, UP, central India, would love to hear from them if so. Best Regards.

I am particularly interested in person that may have come to WA on the Castel Felice in 1966 - or others that may have arrived by ship around that date. I want to find how the realities differed from the promises, what difference they found in culture etc. here and if possible why they went back to the UK. We will be answered  Thanks June.

I traveled back and lived in many of the countries I first saw from the decks of Arcadia, but the memory of the people I met and the places I saw have been my life's treasure.  Arcadia was home to those memories. Thank you so very much for the chance to journey back.

From Tilbury April 1957.

Comments: My mother and father Larry and Win O'Daly and their 7 children, aged from 1 to 14, migrated to Australia in April 1957. We came via the Cape as the Suez crisis was on. I was 13 at the time and had a fantastic time. Had a rough time in the Bay of Biscay and ran into the path of a cyclone near Capetown. Many happy memories.
