A great site!!  I was a Bell Boy on the 'Arc' First trip was a Migrant run to Sydney via Rotterdam, Lisbon, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Durban where I got chased by a big Zulu in national dress, scary moment at 16 yrs of age, on to Fremantle, Melbourne, Sydney then cruising around the Islands and up to Alaska....Great times!!! Was crew cabin 131 (joined Police in London later and got shoulder number C131 too....been a lucky number since) Remember another Bell Boy we called 'Farmer'.  I was one of the 30 crew members that walked off the ship at Vancouver in protest of non-payment of overtime and left to the immigration bod's then deported back to UK only to be kicked out of the Merchant Navy (I still have the Canadian newspaper clipping reporting the story)....Joined Police then and never looked back....now working for large Mining company in Australia. If anyone else was one of the 30 and wants to get in touch please do.

My parents, brother & I left Tilbury on the 16th January 1963 in the freezing cold & snow of winter, to arrive in Fremantle on the 11th Feb 1963, one of the hottest days on record that year. I was 13 at the time & remember that the voyage was very rough, especially going through the Bay of Biscay. The voyage took 4 weeks & I couldn't wait to arrive in Aussie (even though it was really hard leaving all my friends, having to start again, with a new school & making new friends). We were scheduled to land in Melbourne, but by some hand of fate were asked if we would like to disembark at Fremantle, at which my father agreed. We went to Graylands hostel in Claremont, staying there a few months before moving out to rental accommodation. My father was a painter & decorator, always getting plenty of work & eventually achieving the Australian dream of buying his own home, something he never had the chance to do in the U.K. My father never regretted making the decision to move to Australia so that his children would have a better future (as so many other families did back then). I didn't settle in too well at school (Swanbourne Senior High School) finding it hard to make friends & I remember in the holidays telling my father that I wanted to leave, he gave me 2 weeks to find a job, which thankfully I did, working for a wonderful Aussie couple who owned a gift shop in Manning. I finished up marrying an Italian boy (also an immigrant) in 1971 in St. Patricks church in Fremantle. Looking back all those years ago it was a huge decision for my father to make on behalf of his family, travelling to the other side of the world for a better life.

Congratulations on a job well done. I travelled with my parents Wilf and Doreen Jones to Australia, disembarking at Fremantle. Can you imagine the thrill of a thirteen year old on a voyage like that? I must have explored every inch of that beautiful ship as only a thirteen year old would, leaning over the stern rail and watching the wake for hundreds of nautical miles on end, the flying fish, and nothing but water from horizon to horizon, and where did all those seagulls come from way out there? The free icecreams for the children, the duty free drinks and cigaretts for the adults, the wonderfull P&O food and attention to detail, and the dedication of the crew.
It was without a doubt one of the best memories of my life, Regards to all Roger Jones.

I would be interested in anyone who may have travelled on the 3 September 1939 voyage to Bombay, India. I was 18 months old and my parents are no longer living, so I am unable to obtain any more information than I was told as a young person. I do know that we were the last passenger ship to set sail after WWII was declared and that the ship went to sea without an escort. My father said that all male passengers had to take turns at night to man the watch. I would also like to know if there is a passenger list available for that sailing. Also, would anyone remember this 80 Days Around the World Cruise from 11 April 1959 on SS Chusan. I boarded in the UK and got off in Hong Kong. My mother Sybil Sharpe and I had a wonderful time on board and met some very nice people. Some stayed for the entire cruise and many of us got off at ports throughout the cruise. Would love to hear from anyone who might remember this voyage and my mother and me.

We travelled on to South Australia, settled for a time in Burra before moving down to Adelaide. (My father William John Bampton remained in Darjeeling, India for another year, then joined us in 1953.) I am compiling our family history and would be thrilled to hear from anyone who travelled with our family on the Strathmore, and would love to receive a copy of the passenger list and any copies of memorabilia associated with that trip.

Since then my cruise ship imagination grew and I have travelled on P&O in Oz and Overseas and lots of other cruise ships my favourite is the Panama Canal. I have scored up many cruises and wonderful times and it all stemmed from my fascination with the Orcades as a 9 year old. I have kept all of the memorabilia menus programmes etc. I love ships. My parents, siblings & I travelled from the Bahamas to the UK aboard the Oronsay in '65 and returned seven years later aboard the Orsova. I was just shy of my tenth birthday when we set sail from Southampton aboard the Orsova. The route was Southampton - Bermuda - Port Everglades - Nassau - Kingston... and on through the Panama Canal to San Francisco and points West (we, of course, disembarked in Nassau). Our cabin was on F deck, at the waterline, and I distinctly remember the sea swashing against the porthole glass like suds in a front-load washer. I quickly made friends with the other more adventurous kids emigrating hither and yon, and we soon quit the "playroom" and took to roaming the decks and passageways, much to the consternation of parents, crew, and cabin stewards. Poor Mr. D'Souza..  Thanks for taking the time to put this site together -- it's certainly a pleasure to look at the grand old ladies again and remember a time when ships were a lot more (and a lot less, in some ways) than glizty floating hotels.

I spent 10 years with P&O on Iberia, Oronsay, Canberra, and The Spirit of London. I started as a winger on Iberia in 1965 and then joined the u gang and worked in the leading hands mess, eventually ending up as 3rd laundryman and assistant linenkeeper. I remember the long days at sea when there was no water for the laundry to work, all we could do was drown our sorrows and work all the time we were in the next port sometimes upto 48 hours straight. Also there was the oil leak in the baggage room   Assistant linenkeeper on the Canberra for the New York cruising round the Caribean. Ran aground in Grenada(was it twice or three times in one night). Then there was the fire on the Oronsay and the job of clearing up all the damaged cases of beer afterwards. That was some homeward journey. I enjoyed doing the crew shows and entertaining the passengers in the Old Time Music Hall etc. When people ask me what it was like, I tell them that it was the best ten year holiday I ever had. If any body recognises me you are welcome to get in touch.

My late wife, Winifred Jean Ellis was 10 years old when she last sailed from Freemantle to Tilbury with her two sister, Mum and Dad. At age 77, she still vividly recalled that most pleasant voyage. She remembered that the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo was on board and she claimed that she could still smell the spices that eminated from Colombo. She had been at Perth College and returned to England for what turned out to be her Dad's last leave from Pilot Boat Duty (he was a Master Mariner) on the Salween River in Burma. He died upon his return to Burma of pneumonia, and my wife spent WWII in Tunbridge Wells. Much to my good fortune, she emigrated to the USA, I met her in 1962 and we had 43 years of glorious wedded bliss before Leukemia claimed her. Any stories of that voyage would be appreciated for our kids and grand kids.

Travelled from Tilbury to Brisbane on the Mooltan in February 1951. Arrived Hamilton wharf Brisbane 23rd March that year with my family. Father Jack Shaw, mother Marion, sisters Marie and Patricia, brothers Jim, David and Brian plus myself, Lawrence aged 13. Great trip, great memories, joined RAN for seven years in 1954 and Merchant Navy in 1961 until 1978, sailing around Honiara, Rabaul, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, USA and Canada. My father Jack, brothers Jim and Brian have since passed away, Jim married Jaqui Sales who was also a passenger onboard Mooltan with her family. Father Ernest [Deceased]and Mother Marjory Sales with five daughters, Jaqui, Molly, Lorraine, Mary and Josephine along with the Shaw family, shared cabins on 'D' deck, they all still reside in and around Brisbane with their spouses and children. I'm retired now and living on the New South Wales Central Coast with my wife Carol and my mind often travels back in time to those halcyon days. Regards, Irish.
