Had two children who in turn have given me eight grand children. Upon delving into my collectables I have several photographs of crew, passengers and have film of being on board ship, entering several ports and destinations.Would love to hear from anyone who remembered me, what great days. Contact is through my son Mark, I will get a computer one day.

As a young child I emigrated to Melbourne with my parents aboard the SS Oronsay along with the Millionth Migrant.  A great fuss was made of the ship whilst departing from Tilbury and at every port we called at. Coincidentally I was also a passenger when the Oronsay made its other historic journey - the longest sea voyage in peace time - a world cruise. We picked up the ship in Melbourne and visited Adelaide, Freemantle, Bali (we were the first tourists to visit the island and had to be taken ashore in the ship's lifeboats), Singapore, Bombay, Aden, Port Suez, Port Said, Naples, Marseille, Gibraltar and Tilbury. The Bay of Biscay nearly nearly took a heavy toll of the ship - with winds in excess of 100 mph.  My father took a movie camera with him so I have a lasting legacy of the journey. Although we were due to return to Australia the following year on the Oriana, we never made it and I have never been back to Oz since. I would like to hear from other child immigrants.

Travelled with my older brother & mother from Tilbury to Bombay in early Feb. 1966. Cut my ankle up on board, riding a "scooter" on the decks. I remember winning a prize for the fancy dress, it was a model of a freighter from WWII, probably a liberty ship. 2 Weeks on board, an adventure of a lifetime for an 8 year old!

Great Site. I emigrated to Australia as a young man (cost £10) leaving Tilbury August 11th 1959. Fond memories: Best food I had ever had, Cabin to myself, Party night once a week, Racing frogs (wooden) Rolf Harris going home to Perth, Rolf Harris organising  a great show with some very talened passengers, lots of table tennis and the ship breaking down in the Red Sea. Lived in Brisbane (Kankaroo Point and Clayfield) and Mt Isa. I do have a passenger list.

In the Mediterranean we lost a bellboy overboard, which was a shocking experience, but on the whole we had a marvellous trip as it took us to Port Said, Aden, Bombay, Colombo, Perth and Melbourne. There was a lot of entertainment and deck sport. The crew member who "looked after us" was a huge man by the nickname of "Tiny".

We were a family of £10 Poms. My father was a teacher so Australia paid passage. We spend nearly 4 years in Aus and then returned on the SS Orsova to a very cold and dreary England where you had to wear shoes (we didn't wear any at our little school in NSW). I loved the ship as a 13 year old. In the first class lifts when we were exploring I came across a particularly good-looking lift attendant. I got him to sign my autograph book and he signed 'David from Essex'. A year or two later I saw David Essex on TV and could have sworn it was the same guy. I read he had worked on P & O Lines at that time. I wonder....  We stopped at many wonderful places including Cocos Islands, Egypt, Ceylon, India. I loved it all. What an education.

Served on both the Strathmore and Strathnaver as a Cabin Steward and Waiter from 1960 to 1963. While on board the Strathmore I got married on the 31.7.62, divorced now for 20 years. Wife and I had about one day/night honeymoon in a Gravesend hotel, then had to go back to the ship in Tilbury, for my last trip on P&O. Had lots of support, friendships along the way from both crew and passengers, I had special advice from Bob Clark, who I was told later jumped over the side after being told that he had a tumour on the brain. Everything worked out well for me and I had two children, Mark and Melanie, who in turn have given me eight grand children.
After working on the ships I spent the next four years as a Clerk, also did part time bar work at the Swan Hotel in Staines "just to keep my hand in" In 1967 I joined the police force, Surrey Constabulary, where I remained for the next 30 years. Funny, my friends said that I was the last person  they thought would be a copper, as I was a bit of a tearaway. Did several years on the beat, on Lambretta's and motor cycles, before joining CID and later special branch. I retired in 1997 and have not worked since, living on my reasonable pension. This July I will be 65 and would love to hear from anyone who knew me, ideally along with a couple of photos of then and now.

What a wonderful site! I travelled with my family from Australia to England, turning 13 years old 3 days after we left. I still have my birthday card from Captain F. Woolley. Sadly, all my memorabilia I collected at the time was thrown out in later years (much to my regret), so all I still have is a small slide of the Orsova in a hard, plastic case (was on a keyring), my Crossing the Equator certificate, my family's certificate for visiting the top of Table Mountain, Cape Town, and my birthday card. Fortunately, my parents took some Super 8 films, which they have since turned into videos and given copies to myself and my 3 sisters. We visited Durban, Cape Town, Teneriffe and Casablanca (where my youngest sister was nearly sold for a rug and 2 camels (or something similar)). Fortunately, my parents declined the offer. If I have some of these places wrong, it's because we came back to Australia 18 months later on the Fairstar, so I may have them mixed up with places from this trip. I also have a card signed by many people on the ship at the time, although there's only one person I remember vividly. He was a waiter called Steve Johnson (I think) and as a 13 year old, I was madly in love with him. I used to sit outside the restaurant for hours, just watching him. (Very sad, wasn't I!) Some other names I have are: Al Hopgood (Bandleader), Vincent Ferra, "Whiskers", Martin Harper S/W, Stanley S. Taylor (PRS), Chris Lorch (Startrek), A. Rodriguez, Jack (Pianist) and several others I can't decipher. I would love to hear from anyone who was on this trip, as a passenger or crew member. Thanks for listening. Collette.

I and some 4000 more found ourselves aboard the SS Strathmore sailing from Grenock to Bombay in December 1943. It took 8 weeks to reach our destination, via the Meditrerranean and the Suex canal, stopping for bunkering in Aden. We went through very heavy December seas in the Bay of Biscay where it became noticeable that the sanitary conditions for the troops on board were extremely basic. We sailed in a convoy and safely reached our destination in January 1944.

I was 14 when we, My mother Nelly, sisters Heather, Mary, Norah and brother Bernard came. First meal sitting was funny, Mother had very little money-she asked the waiter how much the food would cost, he said its free madam. Mother with great relief said "dig in children". While in Adelaide she visited the Himalaya berthed next to the Stathaird. She fell off it into the water, all ok  God takes care of drunks.

I Just typed in Strathaird into a search engine and up you popped. We were a family of six emigrating to Australia. I was a twelve year old boy and that trip from Tilbury to Sydney is one of my happiest memories. Great site. I look forward to exploring it. Kind regards Frank Brown.

My parents three brothers and I migrated to Australia in 1969 on the beautiful SS Iberia. I have spent a long time looking for information on our boat and am pleased to find this site. Would love to hear from anyone who was on board the same time as me. Also I would like to get hold of a passenger list?? I enjoyed looking at your site and reading familiar stories.

I was a Bell Boy, 16 1/2 years of age. I did two trips before I 'jumped ship' with a fellow Bell Boy for a stupid bet. I am now trying to find my mate 'Butch'  who was the other Bell Boy. We both jumped ship in Sydney to get a job in Australia. Is there any way I can trace him please?

Comments:
My first trip on the Arcadia was on 20 October 1978 for a 16 night Pacific cruise. The Arcadia was nicknamed the "Friendship" and rightly so. I fell in love with her!  A ship with so much character and a fun crew. I have many memories and photos from this trip and a lovely picture of her taken at the Overseas Terminal - Sydney Cove, Nov 1978. I also did a quick 2 night trip up to Brisbane in December 1978. Unfortunately, my Arcadia's fate was near and did her last cruise on 19 Jan, 1979. The final voyage to Taipei departed Sydney on 29 January, 1979, with a huge send off. I would love to hear from any passengers (or crew) from Arcadia, who have their stories and pictures to show and tell.  Cheers,  Robyn
