I was born on board the Strathmore on December 15th 1947 as she sailed  from Bombay to Tilbury. My mother lied about how many months pregnant she was - no scans in those days!  In 1998 I cruised on board the Arcadia and, from talking to the entertainments officer, was able to obtain the exact latitude and longitude of my birth.  Having read many of the entries on this site, I feel extremely proud to be part of the Strath Sisters family.

There were three families of us, the Redmonds, Penders and Blakleys (all related), 14 in all sailing from Tilbury to Adelaide in 1962 (we made the front page of the Adelaide Advertiser on arrival because of our large family number). I turned 13 on the boat and had just made it into the adults dining room for the trip because I was twelve when we left. Had great cabins on the promenade deck (1st class) - luck of the draw, we had only paid the ten quid! Fantastic experience at that age, loved the ship and will never forget it. Lovely Goanese waiter who never said one word but who remembered everyone's order without writing anything down. Vividly remember being on deck during massive waves in monsoon in middle of Indian Ocean - and the flying fish and bum boats in Port Said. Bit of a let down from promenade deck to Finsbury Hostel in Adelaide but since then, thanks to lots of hard work early on by my parents, have never looked back or regretted coming to Australia. Going over your site has bought back great memories of the boat and the trip. There is obviously thousands of us out there now in out 50s who share similar experiences and know the feeling of coming out to Australia as kids and starting a new life after travelling on these wonderful ships.

Great site and extremely interesting. We left Tilbury mid May 1956 and arrived in Melbourne 17 June 1956. Reason I remember the date of arrival is because we were due to arrive on the 16 June (my Father's birthday) but were delayed a day due to bad weather. I was eight and was with my parents and four siblings. I enjoyed dining without my parents and the trip through the Suez Canal was fascinating as we sat on the railings with our legs dangling over the sides and watched women washing clothes on the bank. Was that the last trip through the Suez for the Strathaird? I would love a copy of the passenger list if anyone has such a thing. Keep up the good work.

I was 4 years old when my parents and elder sister embarked on the SS. Ranchi at Tilbury. I can conjure up the smells of the ship and I have vivid memories of the journey - not surprising when the engines kept breaking down and the ship blocked the Suez canal for a week. I also remember a baby dying and being buried in the Red Sea(?). When we got to Fremantle we had photos taken of us with big lollipops - our first unrationed sweets. I also remember a little boy called Johnnie stabbing me in the back with a knitting needle during a fancy dress parade - he was a soldier, I was a 'Hula-hula girl'. The Crossing the Line ceremony is another vivid memory - my Mum was covered in porridge before being tipped backwards into the pool. We lived in a flat in Ashfield, Sydney but we only lasted 4 years as Mum was homesick. We returned to England in 1955 on a cargo boat, the S.S. Largs Bay (Shaw Savill Line). I still keep in touch with my first school friend. I cried on seeing Sydney from the air on my first return in 1992. I realised how important living there had been. I am delighted to find your site. I think this bit of history is not well recorded and would love to collect the stories of people who did these journeys by ship. I have an SS. Ranchi brooch and a sailor doll from either the Ranchi or Largs Bay.

What a lovely site! I was born in England in 1952 and first travelled to Australia with my family on the Arcadia in 1956, but my parents were Australian. My late father travelled to England on the Himalaya in 1949, when she was returning from her maiden voyage. My mother and late sister followed a little later on the Strathmore. In December 1961 my Mother, sister and I headed back to England on the "paying off" voyage of the Strathnaver. Maybe I was just the right age, but it was a wonderful trip for me. Yes, boiler troubles kept us tied up in Malta briefly, I think we may have stayed in Lisbon a little longer than originally planned and the loss of stabilisers in the Bay of Biscay wasn't exactly comfortable, but out of my three trips to and from the Antipodes (I later returned to Australia from Milan on the Marconi line, Gallileo)  it was by far my favourite. We still have some memorabillia from that final voyage I think, menus, newsletters, photos, etc.

My family (Dad, Lou; Mom, Frances; Sister, Janet) immigrated to the U.S. when I was 10 years old.  (I celebrated my birthday after leaving Sydney.) It was such an exciting time. I fondly remember roaming the many decks, taking advantage of my newly acquired independence. I remember the lift operator befriending me, the menus with the fascinating little stories, the special kids activities, swimming in the pool, getting a certificate for crossing the international date line, throwing streamers down to the people standing on the dock at each port. I thought the ship was huge! In fact many years later, while visiting the Queen Mary docked permanently in Long Beach, I announced to my wife and kids that it was small compared to the Himalaya. It's kind of hard convincing them of that after seeing the pictures on your web site. Ports of call en route after Sydney included Auckland, Suva, Honolulu, Vancouver and San Francisco. Wow!   What a treat for a kid that never left Victoria. We disembarked in Long Beach and headed to our new home and new life in Hollywood. The trip was a magical, unforgetable experience. Thanks for the opportunity to re-live those great moments.

Good day! I have been interested in ocean liner era of 30's to the fifties, and collect paraphernalia such as menues, trunk stickers, luggage etc. Just picked up a set of luncheon and dinner menues from S.S. Orsova, spanning the dates Monday, 29th April, 1957 - Wednesday, 15th May, 1957. The set also includes invitations to two children's parties (one a fancy dress party on Tuesday, 14th May, 1957 - the other a Children's Party for the same date with menu). The Children's Party menu includes, among other things: Cold Roast Turkey and Ham, Salad, "Orsova" Wonder Cake, Strawberry Trifle, Lemonade, Frivolities, Fruits etc. The card also includes the names and birthdays of several children on various dates, including the day of the party. Can anyone tell me in which direction this trip went, by the dates given above? Has anyone got any information about the "Grand Opening, Point Cruz Theatre, Honaria, B.S.I.P., May 6th 1955". According to the souvenir programme, the proceedings were "Formally opened by His Excellency The High Commisioner Sir Robert Stanley K.B.E., C.M.G. I would be very happy if anybody could shed some more light on both items. Kind regards, Anders W. Beyer.

I remember very little as I was 6 and had Tonsilitis for most of the voyage. I would really like to hear from anyone else that travelled same time. Does anyone remember 1st engineers name?

I'd just finished relating my two trips in liners, to a chap in U.S.A.. I thought I'd look for UK-Egypt 1951 trip (Oranje) and found details. So then tried Egypt - UK trip, May 1956. Delighted with what I found. Now I've to ask my mother which deck & cabin!! We were returning before school term ended, as my grandfather was ill. We sailed from Port Said, little realising we would never return, as my 9th birthday included my Mother's comment "We can't go back to Egypt", because the Suez Crisis had blown up. Happy memories of a fancy dress competition (I was a newspaper seller!) and I still have my prize - a Minic armoured car and greatly treasured it still is. A wonderful web site. Thank you.

My parents left Tilbury with me, 6years old and two brothers 4 & 6 late March 1953 on Strathnaver. It took 6 weeks to get to Sydney via Suez and my memories are of a storm with broken crockery in the dining room and it seemed everybody seasick but me. Broken down for a few days in the Indian Ocean with no ventilation, and the Equator crossing ceremony. We crossed the Tasman in Wanganella and have been here ever since. There must be others who shared my adventure but apart from my family and another we met on route who are also in Auckland I have not come across them. Strathnaver visited Auckland on her last voyage and may have done so one other time in the fifties I believe. Great site and memories.

I was 3 years old and returning from Singapore with my parents. In the Indian Ocean I escaped from the nursery and found my way back to the cabin. I managed to put almost my whole body out of the porthole, where I hung unable to get back in until my parents arrived just in time as my strength had gone and I was slipping forward towards the water! Other than that....I don't remember much about the trip!

I was browsing as this is my 50th year in Oz. and I was hoping to meet up with some from the Strathnaver, for a little celebration. Thanks for giving me this opportunity to maybe meet up with fellow travellers from the Strathnaver. I had been thinking of some kind of advert, but this is great. All the best Hellen.
