Dates: March-April 1962
Comments: Our family sailed to Tilbury, England from Bombay, India to join
our father who had moved to England a year earlier. We enjoyed the voyage immensely. I
clearly remember what was the 1st Class Lounge and the Tourist Class Lounge. Of course
this was a Classless Ship at the time we travelled as far as what parts of the ship we
could visit. My brother and I had an inside cabin with bunk beds and my mother,
grandmother and two sisters shared a cabin with a porthole. I especially liked eating in
the dining room and the Captains Cocktail Party as well as a visit to the Bridge. Recently
we sailed on the QM2 and as fantastic as this ship is the excitement did not match the
experience on the good old Strathmore.

Comments: I have very fond memories of my very first trip overseas and on
the Strathnaver. I was just 20 years old when I left my home to emigrate to Australia on
my own. I shared a cabin with two other girls whose name I have unfortunately forgotten
and made many friends on board including passengers and crew. I was very young and
unworldly, but I will never forget some of the places we stopped at on our way to
Australia; Aden, Bombay, and Suez. British passengers without passports were not allowed
off at Suez in fact I think all British passengers were not allowed ashore. It cost me
£10 for a wonderful experience. I would love to hear from any other passengers or crew,
in particular a cabin steward whose name I think was Allan Stewart, on that particular
voyage. I am now 64 years of age and have been back to Britain many times but nothing will
ever compare to that first voyage on the Strathnaver.

the ship in dock at Le Havre, our first stop before Lisbon en route to Trinidad. I have
done many cruises on the big ships of the present day, but I will always remember the
Iberia with great affection. By the way, many thanks to certain officers who used to let

Gibraltar, the Suez Canal, Penang then the Australian Bight with 30 foot seas! As we
sailed under the Sydney Harbour Bridge little did I realise I'd migrate here 12 years
later. The modern liners still look great in Sydney harbour (if you like floating
factories) but nothing compares to the 'real' ships of the 50's to 70's.

We missed the meal time as we had to say goodbye to all our relatives so my sister and I

pig. Our last site of the 'Olde Dart' was the next morning when we saw the White Cliffs of
Dover. Our first port of call was Port Said (very hot), then Aden. We sailed onto Colombo
and our first taste of Australia was Fremantle. We didn't get off at Adelaide and it was a
foggy morning when we arrived at Station Pier in Melbourne. Smooth sailing most of the way
except for the Bight. Never got seasick (Just lucky I suppose), but it did take a little
while to get my 'Land legs' back when I got off the ship. I loved every minute of it.

Ship: SS Strathnaver
Dates: 1957
Comments: When I was 8, my Mum, my 78 year old Nan & I emigrated to
Australia on SS Strathnaver. We sailed to Perth in Western Australia & stayed for just
over 2 years. Mum didn't like it very much out there, so she brought us back on an
Italian ship named Castel Felici. Anyone else been on the Italian ship? The whole
experience for an 8 year old was amazing.

Ship: Otranto out, Strathnaver home
Dates: 1950
Comments: I emigrated to Oz in 1950 with my parents & 2 brothers on
Otranto. For some reason [I never found out ] we returned to U.K.some 2 years later on
Strathnaver. I have the fondest memories of everything. It was wonderful to see the copies
of the menu cards. Can any one point me in the direction to find copies of passenger lists
so I can check when we actually returned home?

Ship: Strathallan
Dates: February 1942
Comments: I was a member of the 2nd A.I.F. Corps of Signals in convoy with
the Orcades and others en route to Burma, Java etc. Java fell and though the Orcades
unloaded some troops, this vessel and the Strathallan were diverted to Fremantle thence
Adelaide. There I was billetted - there being no camps to accommodate troops in either
Freeo or Adelaide. A wonderful time in the home of a family Mundon-Cresdee at Paradise for
about two months.

Comments: My father's friend Joseph Robert Ryan, known as Jos, was lost at
sea from the Stratheden on 13 March 1955, somewhere in the Med. Does anyone know if he was
found and, if so, where he is buried? They knew each other from Tilbury. Many
thanks.

Comments: First voyage in 67 to Australia when I was 12 years old. Should
have passed through the Suez canal but the Arab / Israeli war erupted, This meant a detour
around the Cape. Have been in love with ships and the sea ever since, still cruising with
P&O.

Ship: SS Strathaird
Dates: 18th May 1956.
Comments: My mother and her family travelled on SS Strathaird leaving
Tilbury UK on 18th May 1956, arriving in Fremantle, then around to Melbourne. Her and her
brothers all live in the Newcastle area after arriving there in June 1956. I am travelling
to Newcastle from Perth in a few weeks time for a 'family reunion' with my mother and her
brothers and families. Her family name was James and there was her mother, father, herself
and 3 younger brothers. Any help would be appreciated. It would be a nice surprise if I
could get a copy of the passenger list of her voyage to present it to her at the reunion.
