Comments: I was on the Iberia 1964-1966 as telephonist and only left because I married a fish cook, and married women were not then allowed to stay at sea. I can remember a few of the names of the other girls and am still in touch with my Canadian cabin mate and fellow telephonist Irene.I also remember the shows that a couple of the crew used to put on for the rest of us, great fun! Anybody else remember Sadie and Martha?

I loved my time at sea and hated to leave but those were the rules then. My two children have heard all about my and their Dad's adventures around the world, well the one's we can repeat!! If anyone out there remembers the telephonists let me know please.

Comments: Very exciting to see the pictures of the ships although I don’t know which one was the one operating in 1962. I have wonderful memories of the trip including the dancing competition, crossing the equator, playing on deck and meeting lots of other kids. I was 7 and my brother Jeremy was 3. He had the top of his finger taken off by a slamming cabin door when we were playing around the cabins while the adults had dinner. He also got lost and was found eventually, swanning it on the top deck. my parents, Helen and John Greaney were migrating to Adelaide. i would love to hear from anyone else on the trip. is it possible to get passenger lists? Thanks for a great site.

Comments: I was a bellboy (17 years old!) fresh out of sea training school, and made four trips to Australia.

My first job was to be a lift operator. Then I was a utility steward serving coffee in the main lounge after meals. I met some lovely passengers, and fell in love with a young lady. I think her name was Brenda. She invited me to her home on the next trip. We walked across Sydney Harbour Bridge four times. I didn't get to see her after that, as I got myself into a spot of bother with the law on my next trip, and ended up in Sydney Prison for 6 days!!! I've been a good lad since! Wonderful memories!!!

Devastating for me and I do hope to get over it one day. I reckon they still owe me, and they're all still trying to ignore me. Anyway, in spite of that, it was a great trip, and some top memories of that time...a great adventure for a 7-year-old. Did I mention they forgot my birthday?

Comments: Travelled with parents and grandmother to join other family in NZ, but had special link with Stratheden anyway as by pure coincidence it was my father's troopship from Gourock to North Africa in 1942! (But he couldn't find his cabin!) We had a great trip, made an unscheduled call at Cueto, in Morocco, because of possibility of oil shortage/strike at Port Said. I spent most of my time in 'gang' of seven - ex-soldier/returning tea planter, returning RAF pilot, two dance teachers heading for Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and two Australian nurses heading home, and we were superbly looked after by steward 'Frank'. Great memories.

Comments: I was seven when my parents, three sisters, a brother and I travelled on the Iberia. My sister slipped on the deck as we were leaving, got concussion and was temporarily blinded...not an auspicious start. Then my brother (I think) got measles so my mother spent most of the trip in hospital quarantined with him, so I ran fairly wild. There was another girl who was similarly free, and I think we gave the crew a hard time, riding the lifts all day (until we were banned) and at one stage sitting on the railings until a crewman rang the captain who told us to get off. My friend and I also took all our families' washing down to the laundry and spun a yarn about our mother being dirty and making us do the washing...the ladies in the laundry did it all, even ironed it as I recall! I later got into serious trouble over this when we ended up in a flat next door to one of those ladies in the laundry and my lies were found out.

I started as a bellboy and progressed to 1st class silver service waiter. I had a very short stint as a wine waiter, I was sacked on the first day, I was caught giving ice cream to crew during boat drill :-) I wonder if P&O realised that apart from making money that they gave thousands of people very fond memories and experiences that would last a lifetime. i still have stuff ie menus postal information sheets etc, why do we keep it??? :-) Thank you for you hard work to set up and keep this fantastic site going. Sadly I’ve e-mailed many people from the guest book from the trips i served on, but none of their e-mail addresses are still working. Please if you were on them it would be really good to hear from you. Happy days :-) they still are, but they were special!

Comments: I was six when my family migrated to Australia, as £10 Poms, on the Strathaird. We left from Tilbury in September 1956 and went to Adelaide. I remember the journey vividly for many reasons, one of them was when my sister went missing, when she was being looked after in our cabin when my parents went to dinner. The boat was stopped and a man overboard drill was instigated. My sister was eventually found asleep on top of the hatch cover on D deck and the journey was resumed much to everyone's delight!

I remember having to go to the sick bay covered in lumps - transpired my unsupervised menu at teatime had consisted of fish and chips for about 2 weeks. My mother insisted on coming to the dining room after that. There was also a chap dressed as a penguin wandering around during the children's sitting. Also 'crossing the line' celebrations - I still have the certificate. Well organised activities for the kids on a long trip (Suez was still shut) - who remembers the Beetle Drive? Huge ship and huge numbers of people - bit of a difference to the cargo ship we travelled back on - only 12 passengers!

Comments: I arrived in Australia with my family - Bill and Betty Taylor, brothers Darrell and Glynn, and me, Janet, on the Stratheden. After 10 years, I returned to England on the Stratheden to see the rest of the family and met the love of my life, Peter, one of the stewards! We've now been married almost 43 years and have two children and two grandchildren. Blissful memories of the whole experience. Your site has also helped with compiling our family tree and many of your wonderful photos will be included. Thanks so much Mel!!

From: Basildon, UK

Ship: Strathaird

Dates: 10/08/1959

Comments: Mum, Dad, Richard 7, Carol 4 and myself 8 enjoyed it immensely. I steered boat & remember cafe in Marseilles, the Straits of Messina with high power lines overhead. We watched divers for pennies thrown from ship at Port Said, camel trains alongside Suez Canal and one huge, forested island that Dad reckoned had to be in the Med but that I think was in Indian Ocean. Am trying to find that one on google. The trip of a lifetime that could have only been bettered if done at slightly older age. Rolf Harris was on one of his many return trips to Oz

Address: PO Box 223 Nedlands WA Australia 6909

Comments: I came as an 11-year-old with my family (nine of us!) from Edinburgh, Scotland, on the magnificent SS Strathnaver in, I think, January 1959, certainly early 1959. Every memory I have of that trip is hugely positive and exciting - from the movies, the uniformed crew, the Indian staff, the meals, Mum insisting on all of the kids being given biscuits and milk before bed (a long way from dinner time, perhaps) and much more. I'd love to hear from others who made that voyage.

Ship: SS Strathnaver

Dates: 1956

Comments: My Mum travelled with us from India to Tilbury on her own. Dad had gone the year before. The four kids were under 7 and enjoyed the trip. We had ice cream daily on the upper deck. I remember seeing "flying" fish in the ocean. They must have been dolphins or something but we were enthralled. Our ship made it through the Suez before the crisis and I remember shopping in the markets in Port Said or Alexandria with mum. We arrived in the UK in November with only summer clothes.

Ship: SS Stratheden

Dates: Sept, 16th, 1941.

Comments: I sailed on this ship from the King George 5th Docks Glasgow, Scotland, to Halifax, Canada with my Mother to join my Father who was stationed with the Royal Air Force in Canada. We were escorted across the Atlantic by the Battleships The Prince of Wales and the Repulse, who when they left us went on to the Pacific and were sunk by the Japs. There is more detail that my Mother told me of the trip if you feel that it is required please e-mail me.

From: Carshalton, Surrey, England

Home: Naracoorte, SA Australia

Ship: Orcades

Dates: April 6 to May 3, 1965

Comments: We travelled on the ORCADES leaving Tilbury docks and immigrating to Australia. I was just a teenager and travelled with my parents and my 5 brothers and sisters. We were in B deck, cabins 26 and 29. Our waiter when we had meals was a bloke by the name of peter. We used to call him peter potato, as when he served us he used to say Potato? And we'd say please. I remember that. We had a great time on the ORCADES, it was the trip of a lifetime. Going into the hostel at Pennington was a big let down. We arrived in Adelaide on a Thursday, my oldest sister and I were working age, so, together with my Dad, went job searching on the Friday, and we all started jobs the following Monday. Australia, the land of opportunity.
