Comments: In 1967 my first wife and I sailed on the SS Orsova as immigrants from Australia to Canada. We left Circular Quay on July 25th 1967 and arrived in Vancouver on August 25th 1967. That summer, over a period of 2 months, the SS Orsova was used by P&O to complete the Pacific Circle Route from San Francisco and back, around the Pacific. It was scheduled to carry American schoolteachers for a Pacific cruise during their 2 month summer break. Half way through it was to pick up Australians who were immigrating to Canada. I have many memories of that trip and the ship. We sailed from Sydney to Manila, then to Hong Kong, to Kobe and Yokohama in Japan, Honolulu and Vancouver.

Mum tells us that my older brother was 2nd in a fancy dress on board. His future sister in law won 1st prize! My brothers wife's family migrated on the same voyage! I recall a toy leather camel bought at Aden or Port Said being stuffed with dirty bandages, goodness knows from where. Are there any reunions of this voyage?

Comments: I sailed to Australia as a Bellboy and Steward on the Strathnaver. The ship was old and the porthole deadlights leaked, when she rolled, water entered our cabins filling the floor with a mess of sloshing sea water and flip flops, beer cans and under wear. And it was stifling hot. We were treated like cattle, a bit like the Channel ferries.

Comments: This is just the best site for a bit of nostalgia. I travelled to Oz on the £10 ticket with my father, mother and younger brother, also my 'stowaway' sister (born in Warragul in May). I was looking for details on the Orontes and if there were any photographs of her in Valencia before she was broken up in 62. I also have the passenger list and a dinner seating ticket from that voyage if anyone is interested in a copy. It was a great voyage for a six year old and I remember such things as the Bay of Biscay storms and the Suez canal, crossing the Equator and morning ice creams at the swimming pool. I remember also the school on the rear deck and being instructed by my dad to take my brother with me. I attended for all of five minutes and then we escaped under the tarpaulin wall and headed to the bow were we loved chatting to the crew. Unfortunately the route we took passed the cafe where my parents were sitting and as we looked very much like the sons they had just dropped off at school they escorted us back.

Comments: Sailed from Tilbury on 15th May 1957 when I was 14 years old. Because of the "Suez Crisis" we travelled round the Cape of Good Hope. Our two stops were at Las Palmas and Capetown. I remember it being very rough all across the Indian Ocean and, like others have mentioned, all the kids were on the lowest open deck, leaning over the rail and dabbling our hands in the water as the ship heeled over. Deadly dangerous but we didn't think of that back then. A well designed site. Congratulations!

There were escorts for the Big Brother scheme travelling and they were friendly with a man who ran Eustice Tours in Colombo. His family entertained us at his home, his children singing and dancing. We had a wonderful day. I would be very interested in obtaining a passenger list or being pointed in the right direction to obtaining one. Great site. Thanks for bringing back so many memories.

I was in fact sea sick before we passed Southend Pier, which was a bit of a come down! What an education the next two years were! So many places visited, so many people met! Comments: What a fantastic site. Congratulations for bringing together people who, after sharing such an incredible experience, would otherwise never see or hear from each other again. I travelled to Sydney arriving 9th August 1957. I was 8 years old and I travelled with a small group of children who went to Fairbridge Homes. I particularly remember 2 of them, twins a boy and a girl who were 12, I think, who left the ship in Fremantle while I travelled on to Sydney. I have often wondered how they got on in their lives. I left my mother in England and went to live with my father and his new family, who travelled on the Strathnaver in 1955, they even had a cabin on E deck, like I did. My sister was conceived on the boat on New Years Eve, and my grandmother travelled on the Stratheden in 1956. I remember there was a big storm in the Altlantic and everyone was very sea sick, we weren't and we had the dining room to ourselves. I would like to wish all who sailed on the Strathnaver in 57, a happy 50th anniversary of their arrival.

Comments: I was a crewmember on the Stratheden 1961-1962. PG Lawrence was the Captain. We stood by the "Canberra" at 5am on the 4th Jan .63 when she had a fire on board and escorted her towards Malta. I remember so many of the crew who took part in the Boxing / wrestling on the last Sunday in Dec. 62 on 'D' deck. Bill O'Loughlin the M.C, the referees, Andy Morris and 'Nobby' Clarke (wrestling) The boxers M.Luttrell from Ireland - Peter Lusted/M. Bennington/S. Warman from London and my mate, the 'hardest' man I knew, Eddie Duff. Where are you Eddy? I fought Dave Keefe (who wanted to go to New Zealand after the last trip the Stratheden made) And who could forget the wrestlers Keith Henry and 'Gentleman Jim' Henry. My seamans passport no. was R777777. Who could forget that number. So many memories.
