I would be very keen to contact fellow students from St. Pauls. My teachers
were Mrs Birley, Mrs Worthley, Miss Eaton, Miss Wright, Mrs Johnson, Mr Mowbray, Mr
Pykett. Head Master Mr Richards. I also remember Mrs Norris and Mr. Drinkwater but I'm not
sure which class he was in. Mr Hickman was the caretaker and I remember Mr Cooper was the
Lollypop man at the crossing. Mrs Barlow was in the School Lunch Room. Students I remember
were Kenneth Whitehouse, Linda Neville, Ernest Steninger, Brian Taylor, Alex Dinwoodie,
Margaret Sarah Olivia Hudson, Margaret Hield, Jaqueline Salmon, Jimmy Croxhall, June
Allen, Terry Smith, Katherine Pickering, Leslie and Terry Thorpe, Cyril Bloor, David
Beardsley, Ian and Jean Lungley, (who lived at 33 Ivy Grove and came to Australia shortly
after us), John Cantrell, Norah Holroyd, who was a prefect. I also remember Steven Norris
whose mum was a teacher. If any of you recognise yourselves please contact me. I
lived at 8 Rushcliffe Ave and 88 Campbell Drive but my family previously lived at 50 Dale
Road and before that, Windmill Row which is long gone.
I've been in Australia since 1957. I'm married to Margaret. We have 3 children Justin,
Shane & Rachel and 3 Grandchildren Jessica, Liam and Makala. Although I am a Plumber
by trade, I have worked in the entertainment industry for 28 years and own a small radio

Comments: Hi Mel, Not currently on-line, therefore using a friend's email address. In reply to your letter in the Evening Post asking for pictures of St Paul's school, I do have some, however, I need to know your email address in order to be able to send them as attachments. Like many others I was saddened when the school was demolished in August 1983 (114 years old) and rushed down to take a photograph just a few days before the bulldozers moved in. I even retrieved a brick as a souvenir. An old school in Arnold where my camera club meets is of the same era, and certain things there remind me of St Paul's, like the church shape windows, glass partions and the round brass door handles (as on Miss Eaton's classroom). I have an interesting photograph of the school choir taken around 1953/4 in which there are five names I cannot remember (perhaps you can), however, you may be a couple of years younger than me. I have many happy memories of the school, some of which we may share in the near future. Best regards, Tony

Comments: You may remember me as my Mum was the music teacher and my uncle was the headmaster whilst I was there. I lived first in Altrincham , South Manchester when Bernard and I got married, then we went to live near Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire where we had a thriving B&B. We now live in Torquay, on the top of the hill overlooking Babbacombe Bay and all of Torquay. We had 5 children, and have 10 grandchildren, and one on the way. My Mother died last March, and I find it really strange without her. So it would be nice to hear from anyone who remembers either her or me, or of course my brother Roger, who is now living in Sunderland with his wife, who is a Doctor.

I haven't contacted Tony Mann yet. We were in the same class and funnily enough the people in the choir he had forgotten I have too. Still it is a long while ago. I remember Dianne Wortley, as well as her mother. Dianne is older than me but was in a play that we all went to see. I don't remember anything about the play except for a few lines where Dianne told her young brother to wash his face as she could see the egg he had for breakfast. The brother answered that the egg was from yesterday. Why anyone would remember that I don't know! The rest of my siblings went to St Pauls. They were Albert who died in 1990 age 50, David 60 who is living in Foxhill Road not far from where the school was. Christine 56 and Linda 50 both in the UK.

Comments: I lived across the road (and just down the hill a bit) from the school in Grieves shoe shop. This is now, sadly, demolished in favour of a petrol station. (John Grieves was my grandfather, and his daughter, my mother, also worked in the shop). Mr. Richards was the headmaster at the time. I sang in St. Pauls church choir as a treble, and was in the cub scouts for a while. I lived for 22 years in the USA (1980-2002), having returned last July to my roots. Now living in Ashford-in-the-Water near Bakewell, Derbyshire. I cant recall too many names of school friends, but I hope that someone will jog my memory! George Stevenson and Michael Eaton are two who lived (as I recall) on Cromford Crescent. Comments: All these names bring back memories, mostly happy ones. I remember Mr Mowbray for his method of punishment; we had to stand on the chair and he would hit the back of our legs with a ruler. I remember my first "sweetheart"; her name was Helen (can't remember her last name) who lived half way up Cavendish Road. I lived on Foxhill Road (can't even remember the number - old age?) just opposite the entrance to Garden Avenue, where we used to play, now it's a school. Our gang included John ?, John Cantrell and someone else who all lived near the wreck (play area) on Foxhill Road. I remember Alec Dunwoodie as we seemed to remain friends until I left Digby Avenue (Arnold and Carlton College) and we went our separate ways. Others are Norah Holroyd, Steven Norris, Cyril Bloor, Katherine Pickering (think we got into trouble with Mr Richards once for throwing her skipping rope over a lamp post?), and lots more. I used to be in the choir (can't sing a note now) and I think we won a few cups at the Albert Hall in Nottingham. I'm at present working in Libya but get back to my house in Burton Joyce every couple of months, for a pint down the Cross Keys and a few other establishments. Thanks for the memories to all the people in the book and those who aren't.

I was very upset when I heard it was to be knocked down, but it's great to have the photographic memories of how it used to be. Sadly as I was so young when I left (just 6) I never kept in touch with any of my schoolmates and my memories of their names and the teachers' names have faded over time (though I definitely remember Kerry O'Leary being one of my best pals back then). I do still have happy memories of my time there (definitely some of the happiest years of my life!) If anyone remembers me, I'd love to hear from you. located thanks to Trevor Cooper, whose brother Dereck was in my class. I can recall
many faces whose names now elude me, but I do remember Robert Godfrey, Geoff Watkins,
Robert Thompson, David Hopewell, Stephen Cupit, Ernie Steninger, Jimmy Croxall, Terry
Kirk, Valerie Newham, Janet Good, Cyril Bloor, John Blatherwick, John Straw?, Norah
Holroyd, (who doesn't remember Norah?), Ann Harding, Steven Norris, Terry Allen, my
cousins, John and David Leaper, and John Dring, and Rodney Reed and Carol Barker, who have
supplied the attached photographs. In the egg and spoon race, from left to right are
Terry Kirk, whose mother, Ivy lives locally and is still going strong, Rodney Reed,
myself, Robert Godfrey, (I can't identify the next two), and Mrs. Wortley at the
end. I think the school choir photo is from 1954/5, and help would be appreciated in
identifying all those faces. My teachers were Mrs. Birley, Mrs Wortley, Miss Eaton,
Miss Wright, (who was a crack shot with the blackboard rubber), Mr. Drinkwater, Mrs
Johnson, Mr. Pykett, and of course Mr Richards, the headteacher. On leaving St. Pauls', I
moved to Carlton Le willows Grammar school. I was born at 29 Foxhill Road, Carlton, from
where my grandmother ran a coal business, and my father had a building and joinery
workshop. In 1965 I moved to 3, Gladstone Street, and married Sandra Chaplin, who
sadly died in 1999. I do recall her often mentioning Sandra Pole, Christine Coleman
and June Allen, who was her cousin, and I would be delighted to hear from any of
them. I lived at 10a Cromwell Street for a couple of years, and I now reside at 88
Carlton Hill, which was Carltons' police station from the late eighteen hundreds, before
becoming the local civil defence headquarters, and then a probation
office. Consequently, I have always lived within a hundred yards of St. Pauls' school
site. I was the Gedling Borough Council representative on the school governors when
St. Pauls' closed, and it was my unfortunate task to convince the parents to move their
children to other schools. On a brighter note, I have sufficient space to accomodate
a small reunion party for anyone who is round about sixty years old, or perhaps the St.
Pauls' Church community hall would be more suitable, please contact me if you are
interested.

Comments: Lovely web page - I have named some people in the
the photo of the choir 1950s. I had not long been at the school having moved to Carlton
and had previously attended Jesse Boot Primary school. We had had a mighty day on this
singing trip and won everything we went in. Photo was also in the Nottingham Evening
paper. I have old photos and will try to get them scanned and sent to you. I was a St
Pauls from 1957 to 1960, then I went to Cavendish Secondary Modern. I particularly
remember doing dancing in the next door hall and the music came from a wind up gramophone!
Do you remember Christmas partys and we took in our own plate, cup and saucer? We
had jelly and blancmange and paste sandwiches all sitting down in our Sunday best whilst
mums looked on. When I took my boys back in 1987 I took them down to the school to show
them I was shocked to see the Tescos, no one had told me. It seemed a very sad day to me.
Keep up the good work and well done. Regards Lorraine.

I was directed to your website by Bernard Leaper by a chance meeting. All my family
attended St Pauls School. My elder brother Brian, who sadly passed away in June this year
2006, my younger brother John and my sister Marilyn, Mum also went there. I can remember
receiving my Coronation mug shortly after arriving early in 1953. The only other memorable
event was Nottingham Forest won the FA Cup the year I left in 1959! I went to watch the
celebrations in the city center with Robert Robinson and got a right telling off for
getting home late. I remember most the teachers mentioned on the site also their excellent
teaching skills and the ability of some to hit anything with a board rubber at 50 paces!
About this time of the year we would be decorating the class rooms with leftover milk top
foil from Wheldons Dairy whilst trying to keep warm by Mrs Birley's fire. Here's a
few names not mentioned: Judith Dring, Judith Grant, Julie Marriot, Maureen Cantrel, Danny
Morris, Brian Butler, Malcom Fearn, David Stanley........It's quite fantastic
how, when looking at the website, it brings back so many memories.

I attended for just a short time but have some great memories. The toilets outside used to
scare me and they were freezing in the winter! I remember being milk monitor and putting
the straws in the milk. My teacher was Mrs Castleton and head Mr Price. Pupils I remember
are Gillian Rhodes? Paul Mehew and Craig Whelpton. We used to play Robin Hood and Maid
Marion. I remember finding loads of old books under the sheds past the toilets and being
told not to suck the pipes when we were looking out the windows as they were lead and
poisonous! My dad Peter Downing also attended St Paul's in the 50's as well as my great

Comments: My teachers were in order Mrs Birley, Mrs Wortley, Miss Eaton,
Mrs Norris, Mr Harrison, Mr Watts and Mr Sneath. The Headmaster was Mr Richards. I also
remember Mrs Barlow the 'dinner lady' and her colleague Miss Toby. I was in the choir and
have a cutting with photo from the Nottingham Evening Post from May 1964 when we along
with other school choirs performed at the Albert Hall in Nottingham. I'm glad I found your
website it has brought back so many memories. I still have a few of my old reports Mrs
Norris wrote 'I wish she would talk a bit less'. Perhaps that's why she Sellotaped
my and my friends mouths shut during one lesson. Rather extreme but true.

Comments: I have been looking through this site and it as brought back some good memories, it was a shame the school had to be knocked down. Me and my brother (Paul Smith) moved from Chilwell in 1969 so we started half way through a term which was hard being the new boys. I can remember getting the slipper off the head teacher, I think it was Mr Price which put me on the straight and narrow from then on, i think they should bring the slipper back in at schools. Anyway a great web site and I will look to see if I can find any old books or photo's. Good times.
